Students at all grade levels greatly benefit from academic support outside of the classroom. According to the 2005 ACT Policy Report, the U.S. Department of Education recommend that students begin planning for college as early as the sixth grade. (National Association for College Admission Counseling, 1999; National Association of Secondary School Principals, 1996; U.S. Department of Education, 1999)
At most schools, the time in the classroom must be spent on teaching the required state’s standards leaving little time for test taking skills, organization and time management preparation, development of reading skills and so much more.
Students at the middle and high school levels are often focused on academic success while other components necessary to flourish in college are overlooked. Furthermore, students who are involved in a number of outside activities including sports, community service and employment have little time for college readiness and retention pieces.
The ACT report recommendations include that students begin college readiness activities in middle school so students meet their:
• Postsecondary and career goals
• High school graduation requirements
• Middle and high school courses needed to prepare for higher education
• Standardized assessments needed in middle and high school
This can all be achieved through our program that balances the necessary preparation with success inside and outside of the classroom.
